If you’re looking for a quick technique to take your card making up another level without the head scratching and measuring then this card shape and this #TuesdayTip is perfect.

This card shape is based on a 7×5 card blank in landscape orientation. In its simplest form you need to mat and layer your papers as you could on any other card. This adds definition and helps to frame the focus of your card, whether that is a die cut shape, a stamped image or the paper pattern itself. To do this, measure and cut rectangles from two different papers. The difference in size between the two doesn’t needs to be massive as you’re only after a narrow edge to give a crisp finish to the card edges. I usually measure a quarter of an inch intervals but it doesn’t need to be precise so long as it’s straight!

The beauty of this card comes from the additional mat and layered topper. Using the same papers as you used on the main card will maintain the cohesion but there are lots of different examples in the images in this post. The topper is placed onto the card so that it sits higher than the top of the card blank. This will really make your card stand out and be just that little but more special than a regular card size.
Below I have included a few examples of cards made using this technique including a Christmas sample using the brand new Trimcraft Christmas craft stash.

Lovely cards. I tend to be quite safe with my layouts – I struggle to think of how to package others and get fed up making envelopes. I really like how much wow factor these have, though. I wonder if it might work I trim my card blank down so that it plus the standing proud topper fit in my premade envelopes… Something to try

I was going to ask about envelopes. I love different shapes like this, but fitting them into an envelope always puts me off.

Good question!! I either make my own (you can find templates online or there are scoreboards available) or I buy larger envelopes such as C5 size and just make sure when I’m adding the topper that it fits the height.
