As an island nation many of us have an affinity with the seaside and have many memories of childhood summers spent on the sands (or pebbles), bucket and spade in hand, enjoying sandy picnics and wrestling windbreaks.
I still love going to the beach, taking my children on adventures across the dunes and even sometimes just sitting, breathing in the sea air and taking some time out. That doesn’t happen as much as I’d like which is why I always take plenty of photos when it does.
This week I finally managed to create a couple of scrapbook layouts using some of these snaps when the most amazing beach-themed collection of papers and embellishments landed in my craft room.
I got to play with the adorable papers and embellishments in the Helz Cuppleditch Beach Life collection ahead of the Create & Craft show they will be featuring on this Thursday. And what a fantastic play it was! Just look at those wooden painted ice creams. They’re just perfect for my scrapbook layout taken in one of my top three seaside locations.
This photo of my daughter was taken when we visited Kingsbridge in Devon, a short ride away from the sandy beaches of Thurlestone and Bantham. I have some amazing memories from those places too, and look forward to creating more layouts using this kit and photos from our visits there.
In my layout I used the glittered ice cream 12×12 paper as my backing sheet and created a border by cutting a sheet of cream 12×12 paper into 1cm strips and laying three across the top and three down the right hand side. I made an ice cream from coloured doilies, topping them with tiny coloured adhesive gems to look like sprinkles.
I mat and layered the photo onto blue card and die cut a border from the fuscia pink paper. I added the wooden ice cream toppers on top of the patterned papers and popped one on top of the photo. I die cut some tags and added them to the top of the page using blue twine and added some notes for the page onto a couple of them, including the date and location the photo was taken. I’m still not sure how she persuaded me to let her have blue ice cream!! I must have been in a good mood because we were by the sea!
My Vitamin Sea layout is a really simple one using the striped paper, which really reminds me of a deckchair fabric, as a background. I added a piece of the glittered spotty paper in the centre of the page and layered the three photos onto gold card. I moved them around on the page a bit before I decided on their final position and stuck them down.
I fussy cut some bunting from one of the papers and placed it in the top right corner and die cut the Happy Times sentiment from the dies in the collection. I used Simply Creative glittered letters for my title and used the bunting die in the bundle to add the date and location to two of the pictures. These were taken on Worthing Beach after visiting a dear friend and her family. They really do appreciate how lucky they are to live a pebble’s throw from the beach! The Beach huts in the bottom left corner are the perfect finishing touch to this layout.
My final Beach Life layout uses the cover page from the 12×12 paper pad for the title. I used a craft knife to cut out the word ‘Beach’ and die cut the letters for ‘Life’ using my First Edition alphabet dies.
The background is a blue sheet of paper topped with torn cream and blue papers to represent the sand and sea, which I used distress inks to add more depth of colour to. I used sandpaper for the bottom layer (shhhh don’t tell my husband I’ve raided the tool box!) The ‘Fun Times’ washi tape acts as a border at the base of the layout.
I used my Cricut Maker to cut the umbrella from some of the papers in the Beach Life paper pad and my First Edition dies to cut out the Beach sign, bucket and spade. The photo is mounted onto a frame which was waste from a card I made using the decoupage pad (more of which below) and I hand wrote some notes on one of the rectangles. The shells are fussy cut from the paper pad and have glitter on them!
After my scrapbooking session, I made a holiday memory book simply adding layered papers to the front of a notebook and making a little pocket from vellum.
I used the washi tape to hide the join and the tape where I secured the envelope togehter. I added the die cut letters and gems on top once I’d secured the envelope to the cover of the notebook. I popped a little wooden ice cream topper inside the envelope as I am obsessed with them and quite simply want to add these to every single project!
I mentioned the decoupage pad earlier when I used the waste from one of the designs in my Beach Life scrapbook layout. There are eight designs in the pad, and three of each design and once again my little 6 year old crafter really enjoyed helping me make these up. He looked at the frog in the deckchair and said “you’d like to do this wouldn’t you mummy?”. I’d jump at the chance, although mine might be a gin and tonic rather than the soft drink on the frog’s cool box!
There will be two choices on offer on the Create & Craft show on Thursday 29 June. The first bundle will include the 12×12 paper pad, the decoupage pad, gems, wooden beach huts and ice cream toppers, washi tapes and sentiment toppers. The second kit will include the 8×8 and 6×6 papers and a set of steel cutting dies which include a beach hut, ‘Good Times’s sentiment, bunting, an ice cream and a majestic looking sandcastle.
Don’t forget to set your reminder to watch the shows, or catch up online when you can, although I cannot guarantee there will be anything left as I think these are going to be really popular.
